‘Virtual kidnappings’ warning

July 30, 2020
The University of Sydney is aware that there are various forms of online scams run by criminal groups that target international students.

The safety and well-being of our student community is our priority, and we work closely with police to protect our students and provide support for anyone affected.

The NSW Police Department, Australia have reported recent activity where telecommunication scams are targeting Chinese International students into a staged ‘virtual kidnapping’. More information about this can be found via the police press conference :https://spaces.hightail.com/receive/NLKGkR1gBh

These incidents, while isolated, are deeply troubling and distressing. We do not believe any University of Sydney students have been targeted, however students should be aware of these types of scams. For students located in Australia, If you receive a threatening or intimidating phone call you should hang up immediately and contact NSW police.

If you think you may have been targeted by a scam we urge students to call 1800 SYD HLP (1800 793 457), or contact The University of Sydney Centre in China 0512-62981900.
