Second round of pre-arrival orientation sessions conclude

June 15, 2018

The Pre-arrival Orientation Sessions S2 2018 were recently delivered successfully in Suzhou (9 June), Shanghai (10 June), Beijing (12 June) and Guangzhou (14 June). Up to 350 students and their family members attended the events in the four cities.

The four orientation sessions saw staff from the University’s student support area, career centre and alumni office provide advice on the range of student services available to help with finding accommodation, healthcare and social networks, career opportunities and preparations, alumni circles and activities, as well as an academic from the University of Sydney give demonstration classes to prepare students for the new learning environment they will be part of.

Senior Australian government representatives from the Australian Embassy and Consulates in China attended the sessions in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. They briefed on important information about protections for international students, reassuring students that domestic and international students have the same rights and access to the same services.

In addition, the University of Sydney alumni were invited to the four sessions; the alumni shared their experiences both study and personal to the newly enrolled students through formal presentations, as well as interacted casually with the audience to answer various enquiries about living and studying in Sydney.

This event have received positive reviews from the participants. The students seized this opportunity to make friends, build networks and consult alumni. Impressed by the demonstration class given by Dr Peter Cafe, a student went to the Shanghai session after attending the Suzhou session. Another student, who had got the offers from a number of top 20 universities in the UK and USA, decided to choose the University of Sydney afterwards.

The half-day pre-arrival program for new students is a joint effort supported by multiple departments of the University. The aim of this program is to ensure that students have as much information as possible to make their transition to life in Australia and study at the University easy and prepared.

The next round of Pre-arrival Orientation Sessions will be held for S1 new students in January 2019.
