The new Shanghai premises of the University of Sydney Centre in China at Yongpingli

Opening a localised chapter: the new Shanghai premises opens at Yongpingli

The University of Sydney Centre in China has officially moved to its new premises at Yongpingli, Xuhui District, Shanghai (2/F, No. 698 Yongjia Road). Building on a decade of development, the Centre will create an open, international space for academic exchange, alumni communities and cultural engagement.

The University of Sydney Centre in China (Centre in China) has officially moved to Yongpingli in Xuhui District, Shanghai (2/F, No. 698 Yongjia Road). From its establishment in Suzhou in 2016 to the opening of its new Shanghai premises, this relocation marks a new stage in the University of Sydney’s international engagement and deeper Sino-Australian collaboration in China.

Blending into the neighbourhood: an organic integration of historic architecture and modern education space

The new premises at Yongpingli sit at the junction of Hengshan Road and Yongjia Road, one of Shanghai’s most distinctive historic and cultural districts.

Guided by a principle of both preservation and renewal, the refurbishment retains the historic scale and texture of the original buildings while introducing a modern, open design language, transforming a closed office environment into an open public space.

Building a multi-purpose platform: connecting academia, alumni and the public

The new Shanghai premises emphasise openness and functional flexibility, creating a comprehensive hub that carries the value of “internationalisation at home”. The reactivated central courtyard and circulation routes provide natural settings for interaction, with the main functions including:

  • Daily office operations and academic project collaboration
  • Industry seminars, small academic lectures and innovation forums
  • Global alumni exchange and community engagement
  • Cross-cultural exhibitions and public experience activities

The Centre’s team said the new space serves not only students and alumni but is also intended as an open window for exchange, building real and lasting connections with the surrounding community and wider society.

Building on a decade of achievement: upgrading the Sino-Australian exchange bridge

Since its establishment in Suzhou in 2016, the Centre has spent ten years advancing deep collaboration between China and Australia in academic research, talent development and industry-academia partnerships. Moving to Yongpingli will further strengthen its role as the University of Sydney’s core link in China.
